Arrival!

Dallas Fort Worth to Sao Paulo to Recife, two long uneventful flights, but I do want to make a few comments about flying in general.

When did they add more seats and make the leg room shorter? Maybe I should lay off the Doritos but yikes...they pack you in like sardines. Was it always this way? On top of that, why do they even bother letting them recline? And after about 75 years in the history of flight you would have thought they could have perfected the in flight meal.

We had a picture perfect landing of Recife. The city is large and sprawling with scenic rolling hills amidst sky scrapers and Terra cotta roofs of houses and businesses.  Not much city planning happening here as it appears subdivisions and city blocks were thrown against a canvass at random. I suppose it all makes sense to the locals, but to the tourist a nightmare to navigate.

In any case we arrived safe and sound with our host Chris Boersema waiting at the gate. Chris whisked us away knifing through traffic like a skilled surgeon.  Driving out here is definitely not for the weak hearted.  There are road signs and traffic lights, although I'm not sure why. It seems everyone just follows their own rules.  A two lane street can suddenly morph into a 4 lane highway by sheer drivers will, and he who has the loudest horn and bravest heart wins the game.

The streets are lined for miles and miles with roadside vendors selling sandwiches, to furniture, to car repairs to whatever might be needful.  Recife is definitely alive with colour and noise and history.  We hope to tour it some more in the upcoming days.

Steve and I are stationed in a small old hotel just a short drive from the Aldeia Training Center. The Hilton it is not, but so far no geckos under the sheets.

Bom Noiche
